Could you share your professional background and what inspired you to lead Rotzinger Food Packaging? What personal experiences or pivotal moments shaped your career trajectory in the food packaging industry?

From a young age, I developed a close connection to the packaging industry because my father was a self-employed entrepreneur in this field. His work sparked my fascination for the processes and challenges of this industry early on and left a lasting impression on me. What particularly captivates me about the Rotzinger Group is its dynamism and its ability to quickly adapt to new trends while consistently delivering top-tier solutions. We owe this agility primarily to our dedicated employees. As a leader, I see it as my core mission to empower and inspire my team. Only when every single team member has the opportunity to realize their full potential can we jointly develop the best possible solutions.

Can you provide a comprehensive overview of Rotzinger Food Packaging, highlighting its core mission, unique value proposition, and key milestones since its establishment?

The Rotzinger Group is a globally leading provider of customized production and packaging solutions for food, confectionery, pharmaceuticals, and cosmetics. Headquartered in Kaiseraugst (Switzerland), the group unites seven highly specialized companies—Demaurex, Hansella, MF-Hamburg, Packfeeder, Rotzinger, Rotzinger PharmaPack, and Transver—offering a comprehensive end-to-end portfolio of innovative, efficient system solutions.

To optimally support our customers, we are organized into three operational competence centers: Food & Packaging, Confectionery, and Pharma & Personal Care. This guarantees specialized consulting and precisely tailored solutions for every segment.

  • Core Mission: Rotzinger prioritizes digitalization, sustainability, and innovation to deliver tailored, efficient solutions for both current and future food production—evident in our continual process optimization, customer-centric approach, and embrace of new technologies.
  • Unique Value Propositions:
  • Rotzinger delivers carefully planned, customer-focused solutions that seamlessly integrate space-saving processes. Thanks to our distinctive hygiene concept, our systems are easy to clean and can be quickly adapted to evolving product requirements. This unwavering focus on productivity, quality, and sustainability reduces total cost of ownership while conserving valuable resources.
  • Key Milestones:
  • Since its founding in 1941, Rotzinger has continually embraced a pioneering spirit—introducing curved conveyor belts in 1968, developing the first delta robot in the 1980s, and revolutionizing candy manufacturing with automated systems. Building on this legacy, the company expanded its reach in 2008 by forming the Rotzinger Group through the integration of specialized companies and further strengthened its global presence in 2022 with a dedicated sales and service organization in the United States.

How has Rotzinger Food Packaging’s approach to sustainable packaging solutions evolved, and what drives your commitment to environmental responsibility?

At Rotzinger, we pursue a holistic sustainability approach that places resource-efficient and effective packaging solutions at the center. Our commitment is based on five key principles: zero waste and energy efficiency, innovative packaging (Eco-Save-Packaging), compact and space-saving systems (small footprint), automated processes for resource conservation, and a healthy work environment thanks to intuitive operating concepts. By combining sustainability and innovation, we offer eco-friendly, space-saving, and at the same time economically advantageous packaging solutions.

What innovative technologies or breakthrough solutions has Rotzinger recently introduced to address emerging challenges in food packaging?

Rotzinger has recently developed several technologies to effectively meet current challenges in food packaging. These include state-of-the-art buffer systems for maximum productivity and “zero downtime” concepts to optimize productivity. Our AI-powered inspection and robotics systems from Demaurex enable automated product flow control, product flow correction, and optimized handling according to the highest quality requirements. All solutions are scalable, flexibly adapt to different product formats, and feature hygienic washdown conveyor belts that are easy to clean. To further minimize downtime, we are currently working on a fully automated cleaning solution.

How does Rotzinger ensure the highest standards of safety and quality in your packaging solutions, particularly for sensitive food products?

Rotzinger guarantees the highest safety and quality standards for sensitive foods such as chocolate or baked goods through strict hygiene guidelines, AI-based defect detection in automated quality assurance, and comprehensive track & trace systems, including serialization. Moreover, we rely on hygienic packaging technologies with non-contact processing and quick cleaning systems to optimally ensure product safety and quality.

What are the most significant challenges you’ve encountered in the food packaging sector, and how has Rotzinger successfully navigated these obstacles?

Rotzinger meets diverse industry demands with sustainable, safe, and efficient packaging solutions. We address rising sustainability standards through eco-friendly approaches, intelligent automation, and buffering systems that boost efficiency and lower reject rates. Strict hygiene measures and AI-driven quality controls ensure food safety, while our modular systems and intuitive control solutions help businesses offset the skilled labor shortage. Targeted concepts for allergen-free and gluten-free production maintain top safety and quality. By uniting innovation, digitalization, and sustainability, Rotzinger remains well-positioned to meet evolving market demands.

What emerging trends do you see transforming the food packaging industry in the next five years?

Over the next five years, I anticipate four key trends that will continue to shape the food packaging industry: First, automation and robotics will become even more important for efficiently and flexibly handling high production volumes. Second, there will be growing demand for individualized packaging—right down to “batch size 1”—as well as on-demand production. Third, smart packaging will gain more relevance: sensors and intelligent technologies will help better monitor the freshness and shelf life of food products. Fourth, the ongoing digitalization will lead to data-driven and self-learning production lines that dynamically adapt to market demands. These trends create new opportunities for more efficient processes, enhanced product safety, and tailored solutions in food packaging.

What key insights or advice would you share with aspiring professionals looking to make their mark in the food packaging sector?

Anyone looking to get started in the food packaging industry should continually explore new technologies and innovations—especially in automation, robotics, and artificial intelligence. Equally important is the ability to analyze production processes using data to achieve efficiency improvements. Given how rapidly the industry evolves, flexibility and openness to new solutions are crucial. Additionally, interdisciplinary collaboration is becoming ever more important as packaging design, mechanical engineering, and sustainability considerations are increasingly interconnected.
