Key Background

In late March of 2025, Agri-Mark Inc., the parent company of Cabot Creamery, on its own initiated a recall of its Extra Creamy Premium Sea Salted Butter following regular quality control testing in which there were excessive levels of coliform bacteria. Although not necessarily dangerous, the coliform is a signal of potential contamination with more dangerous pathogens, such as E. coli, and is a sign of deterioration of sanitary conditions of processing.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) called this a Class III recall, so the product will not lead to serious health effects. However, as an extra precaution, the company wanted to move quickly and transparently. The tainted butter was distributed in seven states: Vermont, New York, Pennsylvania, Maine, Connecticut, New Hampshire, and Arkansas.

The recall covers 8-ounce tubs with the code 090925-055 and a September 9, 2025, best-by date. Fortunately, almost 99.5% of the 1,776 pounds of butter produced in the batch were detected prior to shipping. The 17 tubs that did arrive at Vermont retail stores have not been linked to illness.

Agri-Mark maintained that the contamination is contained in this one batch. Agri-Mark has actually already identified the source of contamination and taken action to avoid such a recurrence in product safety. Store customers who have the recalled butter are not to eat it but to return and receive a full refund or to dispose of it safely.

This accident reminds one of the need for regular checking and prompt action towards maintaining food safety. The prompt action by Cabot Creamery shows a responsive spirit towards consumers’ welfare and adherence to rules.
