Background:
Grubhub’s parent firm, Wonder, has acquired Claim, a restaurant rewards startup that helps local dining businesses attract and retain customers through cash-back offers. The companies did not disclose the financial details of the transaction.
Claim was established in 2021 and runs a rewards-based mobile app that allows users to earn cash-back when they dine at or place pickup orders from participating restaurants. On the business side, restaurants use Claim’s tools to launch customized promotions, drive more in-store visits, and track campaign performance using built-in analytics.
While the purchase price remains undisclosed, Claim has raised a total of $20 million since its launch. This includes a $12 million Series A funding round completed in October 2024. Market intelligence firm PitchBook previously estimated the company’s valuation at around $62 million.
According to Grubhub, the acquisition is expected to strengthen its platform for both restaurant partners and customers. Merchants using Grubhub will gain access to Claim’s customer growth and loyalty tools, while diners will receive more savings and tailored reward options when eating out.
Claim’s entire team has been offered positions within Grubhub following the acquisition. As part of Grubhub, Claim’s tools will help restaurants reach customers with personalized rewards. The company believes this approach will lower customer acquisition costs and encourage repeat visits without increasing operational burden for restaurants.
Grubhub also highlighted that the addition of Claim expands its existing marketing and engagement offerings. With the combined platforms, the company plans to extend Claim’s data-driven rewards system across its network of more than 415,000 merchants and nearly 20 million active diners.
At present, Claim is available to Grubhub users and restaurant partners in New York City. A wider rollout across the United States is planned later this year. For the near term, the Claim app and website will continue to operate separately, though Grubhub intends to gradually integrate the experience across both platforms.
The claim has been backed by several well-known investors, including VMG Technology, Sequoia Capital, Susa Ventures, Lightbank, and Metalab Ventures.
